Summary/Abstract: Comparative analysis of Russian and Polish ethnonyms shows both similarities and distinctions of lexical strata in these cognate Slav languages. Similar Russian and Polish ethnonyms are new loan autoethnonyms in the main. One of the reasons of discrepancy in Russian and Polish ethnonymical vocabularies is different suffixes, which are used in ethnonyms formation. The most productive suffix in Russian is -eų, forming about 40% ethnonyms. As for Polish, the most frequent is formant -czyk. Different ways and sources of loan word formation are important reason of discrepancy in these languages too.
