Summary/Abstract: The newest book of Tomasz Mojsik employs the nalysis of the Pierian componentin myths of Orpheus to investigate the issues of Macedonian ethnicity and identity. In his opinion the myth of Orpheus originated in Pieria, while its Thracian elementsare late and derivative. Mojsik argues for the importance of the cultural policy of kingArchelaos of Macedonia in development and proliferation of the version of the mythwhich makes Orpheus a native of Pieria, rejecting ancient evidence for the Thracian originof the myth of Orpheus. Mojsik’s book draws predominantly upon analysis of literarysources, often fragmentary and late, frequently Byzantine, underusing epigraphic and numismaticevidence.
