Summary/Abstract: This study examines Palestinian politics in the diaspora as an example of the approach of intelligence reports to contemporary political and geopolitical developments. As a result of the scattering of the Palestinian population throughout the Middle East after 1948, a Palestinian elite came into being in the diaspora, occupying important positions in the region. This elite's efforts to widen and deepen their political, social and economic capital enabled it to become an important actor in the politics of the region. During this period, a series of intelligence reports on Palestinian refugees were prepared in the United States between 1983 and 1987. The first report, entitled “The Presence of Palestinians in the Gulf,” dwells on the social and political situation of the Palestinians in the Gulf countries. The second report, entitled “Lebanon: The Growing Powers of the Palestinians,” deals with the general framework of the social unrest created by the Palestinian elites in Lebanon after Israel invaded Lebanon in 1982. The last report focuses on the aspiration and measures of the USSR government to form groups loyal to itself within the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO).
