One Thousand and One Deaths of the Fantastic

Summary/Abstract: Is the fantastic an outdated literary genre? Since its birth in the late eighteenth century, writers and critics have been repeatedly mourning its death. Using Balzac’s L’illustre Gaudissart (1833), Maupassant’s Le fantastique (1883), and Todorov’s Introduction à la littérature fantastique (1970) as case studies, this paper addresses the rationale behind the recurrent critical mourning of the fantastic genre.
