Summary/Abstract: Many students of postcommunist transition were surprised when the center-right coalition government in the Czech Republic collapsed in late November 1997, and accusations of corruption flew in every direction. For many years, the Czech government succeeded in minimizing the salience of corruption in political discourse and in limiting its impact on transition politics; yet suddenly corruption emerged as the central issue in Czech national politics. It became commonly recognized at home and abroad that the Czech Republic suffered from systemic corruption. In March 1998, the European Commission cited pervasive corruption as one of three potential obstacles to the Czech Republic's bid for European Union (EU) membership. [...]
