Summary/Abstract: The article examines influence of a XIX century translation of the Napoleonic Code on the systematization of contemporary Polish legal terminology. The French codification of legislation was of paramount importance for legislations all over the world and laid the foundations for a modern state. The authors present influence of French codification over the Polish law terminology which was being formed in the XIX century. Thanks to the translations of the Napoleonic Code, the systematization of terminology in the field of law was introduced, i.e. assigning names to legal notions, precise determination of their semantics, organizing terms in superior-subordinate relations. In the translations consistency in translational was also proposed. In this way the translations of the Napoleonic Code brought the Polish legal language closer to modernity.
