Summary/Abstract: Pre-Enlightened, Nicholas Mavrocordat is not only a modern leader, but also a true writer. Thus, Philotheosʼs Leisures, a novel authored by such a complex personality, reveals to the reader an engaged ruler, nourished both by the teachings of the ancients and the modern thinkers alike, whose visionary actions are counterbalanced by a permanent reflexivity on existential matters. My work traces some of the more pronounced aspects of his writings that can be seen at various levels of the book, but also the profile of a leader worthy of such a title.
