Summary/Abstract: Human rights and fundamental freedoms are essential to personal development but also to societies and the rule of law. At the same time, citizens have obligations towards the society in which they live, these obligations being essential to maintaining social rights and achieving the general interest. The link between rights and obligations refers to the notion of responsibility, a concept of both juridical and moral nature, which is an individual and collective exigency. Liberties involve responsibilities towards others and towards society, in a democracy, the equality of rights having as corollary the equality of obligations. In this sense, responsibility is a fundamental component of democratic citizenship. In the process of social responsibility, school and education, especially education for human rights but also education for citizenship and sustainable development, have a major role to play. Through training, information and awareness-raising actions, they contribute to citizenship accountability that is indispensable for respecting, protecting and effectively promoting human rights.
