Summary/Abstract: Gender equality is a fundamental human right and a prerequisite for achieving a democratic, solid and sustainable society, but although important progress has been made in different areas, gender equality continues to be one of the major global challenges. There are still in today’s society gender stereotypes, mentalities, customs, prejudices and sexist manifestations that limit women and men to traditional roles and the possibilities, especially of women, to fully exercise their fundamental rights and which are an obstacle to achieving gender equality. The education system plays an essential role not only in producing and reproducing these inequalities, but also in transforming the system of values and the behavioral patterns and in promoting the gender equality paradigm. Achieving equality between women and men is a priority for the UN which, since its creation, has been actively involved in combating all forms of discrimination based on sex.
