Summary/Abstract: The role of translation is to render a text from one language into another. However, this process concerns not only the transfer between languages, but also between cultures. This article is devoted to the problem of breaking the barriers of fidelityby the improper or excessive use of foreignization strategy. The case study concerns linguistic deviations occurring among two different Romanian versions of the collection of stories “Dubliners” and is conceived in the light of the recent retranslation theories, which stipulate a clear contradiction in the application of foreignization in recent works of retranslation, compared to first translations of the same texts. The time gap of 47 years between Frida Papadache’s first rendition and Radu Paraschivescu’s retranslation should act as an agent upon their different approaches. The strategy of foreignization, coined by L. Venuti, was analysed using a quantitative methodology. We hope that this study will constitute a starting point for a more detailed analysis of the relationship between translations and retranslations.
