"To what extent have these transitions succeeded in engendering pluralist polities, active civil societies, and dynamic market economies?" "Do you expect Eastern Europe to become more or less democratic?" These are among the guiding questions posed for our contemplation of the first postcommunist decade. In the spirit of friendly but vigorous debate, we suggest that although these questions may adequately represent the concerns of political scientists, for other disciplines studying Eastern Europe they are somewhat misguided.
