Summary/Abstract: In political science we are constantly reminded that institutions matter. In the study of democratization, this trend is reflected in the attention paid to the question of institutional choice in new democracies. At least two different strains in the literature assign it a central place. One, that of "political crafting," pays attention to questions of which macro-institutional design democracies choose. A second, " strategic choice," pays attention to the interests of political actors in explaining which institutions new democracies choose. [...]
