Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses a part of extensive research on phonological, orthoepic and orthographic competence in the area of sounds corresponding to the letters ą> and ę> in a group of 99 foreign-language respondents, who spoke 11 native languages and were on 3 language levels of Polish (A, B and C). The article presents solely a comparison of the performance of the final letter -ą> by foreigners in a read text and its sound equivalents in spontaneous speech elicited by graphic materials. The data collected in the study was analysed in accordance with the respondents’ level of Polish and the belonging of their native languages to the group of Slavic or non-Slavic languages. Analysis of the results showed significant differences in the performance of Slaves and non-Slavs.
