Summary/Abstract: The article examines the political activities of the Turkish Directorate for Religious Affairs (Diyanet) since 1923. The Diyanet is the most important religious institution inside the Turkish state. Together, the Turkish state and the Directorate for Religious Affairs determine the interpretation of (the “right”) Islam in Turkey. Thisform of cooperation has led to a close connection between both authorities since1923. Based on the thesis that Diyanet was established to support the religious and political interests of Turkish governments, even if they deliberately pursue undemocratic politics, it is not surprising that the Diyanet supports and legitimizes the AKP’s authoritarian course.
