Summary/Abstract: By the mid-1990s, after some five years of transformation efforts, a pattern seemed to have become established in the political development of post-socialist countries. In most cases, the second free election resulted in the return of political parties that are the offspring of the communist parties that either relinquished or were relieved of power at the turn of the last decade (usually including personnel that served in those said regimes). These leftist parties were able to successfully exploit the negative consequences of the shift away from socialism in their election campaigns. As Rose et al. have shown, by early 1994 a majority of the populations of virtually every post-socialist state were clearly reacting against the move to a market economy. [...]
