Summary/Abstract: The study aims to underline the functions of the promenades of the city of Sibiu at the beginning of the 20th century. The research questions rose from the topic of the urban history, in order to show some aspects regarding the public space and its use for the Germans. We propose a social-cultural perspective on the promenade, as it can be depicted in various sources: German written press from Transylvania, such as the „Siebenbürgisch-Deutsches Tageblatt” and „Die bösen Buben”, some archival documents regarding the associations of the city of Sibiu, with great respect on the „Association for Embellishment of the city of Sibiu” („Verein zur Verschöberung der Stadt Hermannstadt”). By using the method of thick description, the second part of the study brings to light some visual sources from Sibiu during Belle Époque.
