In memoriam of Eminent Botanist Iuliu Erazmus Nyárády (1881–1966), Member of the Romanian Academy

Summary/Abstract: In this year we commemorate the 50th anniversary of Erazmus Iuliu Nyárády’s death and the 135th anniversary of his birth. He was one of the most illustrious botanists not only in Romania, but also in the Central Europe too. He lived 85 years, 63 of which were dedicated to scientific activity: he published 14 books, 166 scientific papers, he described more than 1600 new taxa, 25 plants were named after him. E. I. Nyárády’s most pro ductive years are the 1948–1966 period, as a regular member of the Romanian Scientific Academy (elected in 1948). In 1949 he was commissioned to organize the elaboration of the 12 volume work entitled Flora RPR (The Flora of the Romanian People’s Republic). Nyárády set up a working team with 26 botanists and 10 excellent draughtsmen. So Nyárády was co author, editor, and organiser of these volumes.
