Searching for the Balkans – a Personal History

Summary/Abstract: This paper presents the unlikely perspective on Balkan culture and history of a contemporary Serbian artist Marina Abramović. It aims at presenting the manner in which Abramović represents her personal experience on the stage, in an attempt to understand both her own past and the recent events of the conflicting Yugoslavian land. Analyzing the process of anamnesis and aesthetic expression, the vulnerable, yet crucial role of memory and the underlying mystical level of her creation, the essay finally emphasizes the way postmodern performance and body art approach the relation between personal and collective biography in historically tormented areas such as the Balkans.
