The Regional Diversification of Burials in Poland

Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is the analysis of regional and social differences in burial ceremonies. It summarizes the results of a qualitative research conducted in five Polish regions: West Pomerania, Podkarpacie, Podlasie, Podhale, and Warsaw with its surrounding. The qualitative data comes from unstructured individual interviews conducted with funeral parlors’ owners and their employees. Funeral parlors perform an increasingly important roles in burial ceremonies, while their owners demonstrate sound knowledge of the social expectations towards the organization of funerals.
