Summary/Abstract: Jakub Goldberg’s „Studium historyczno-urbanistyczne Szadku” („Study of the history and urban development of Szadek”) of 1961, which has never been published and exists only in typescript form, is a compendium of knowledge about the history of this city. Jakub Goldberg, an outstanding Polish-Israeli historian, was in 2010–2011 a member of the Editorial Board of „Biuletyn Szadkowski”. The „Study” consists of six chapters, the first four of which relate to the history of Szadek from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. The following two chapters are devoted to spatial development of the city. This article is concerned with the first part of J. Goldberg’s work dealing with the history of Szadek from its location at the end of the 12th century to the mid-19th century.
