Summary/Abstract: The photographic album as a specific form of personal picture gallery made its appearance in the 1860s, an era often called the ‘golden age’ of photography. The popularity of this new media began to steadily grow in proportion with the technological innovations that simplified the process of transferring the images captured by a camera from a photosensitive medium onto a relatively durable and easily preservable paper base. Another no less important factor in photography’s growing popularity among the wider public was the concurrent sharp rise in the number of photographic businesses and the affordability of their products. Before too long it was common for several photo studios to coexist in the larger towns and cities, and even the rural areas were not bereft of photographic services.
