Summary/Abstract: I was asked to write about the debates that took place in the Polish intellectual press in 1994, but I must admit that I have not fulfilled my assignment. There have not been many debates in the periodicals that we call by the Russian term tolste zhurnaly, essentially monthlies and quarterlies. For the most part, it is difficult to measure the pulse of daily life by means of these journals, which does not at all mean that they are in some sort of crisis. Quite the opposite, there are probably more of them now than in communist times and they are extremely interesting. But they focus on literature, religion, philosophy, and history, staying far away from the minefields of contemporary life. Real debates, of course, take place only on minefields. [...]
