On the issue of naming female persons in the Russian language

Summary/Abstract: Russian nouns that refer to male persons usually have their counterparts in female forms. Some masculine nouns can refer to specific persons of female gender in Russian. These include, in particular, the names of persons by occupation, job position, public office, rank, etc. In Russian is marked on nouns the category of "feminine". This category includes in the universal language categories and implements both names that are used in naming individuals through the word-formation process. Nouns indicating individuals may express differences in a natural set gender pairs. Russian does not derive feminine forms from masculine nouns but use nouns as universal forms, i. e. the same nouns indicates individuals of both genders. The large number new-formations in contemporary Russian (especially in colloquial speech) using suffixes to indicate the feminine shows that the derivation of feminine forms from masculine nouns is becoming a productive process in Russian.
