Summary/Abstract: This article analyses the film The Theme by Gleb Panfilov as an intertextual dialogue with the Russian cultural heritage. The methodological basis of the article is formed by the premises of the cultural turn in the humanities. A literary work is understood here as both reflecting and shaping the discursive appearance of a certain cultural space. The interpretation includes references to literature, fine arts, theatre, folklore, customs and history, which were noted in the film. The film is set in Suzdal – the cradle of Russian history. The protagonist is a playwright from a privileged social group. The art of writing seems to be a crucial point of reference for him. The director addresses both Russian and world literature motifs. The analysis leads to the conclusion that the Russian literary and cultural heritage filters into every part of the characters’ lives. It is claimed that Panfilov reinterprets typical patterns of Russian culture in the context of the late Soviet era. Attention is drawn to the strong rooting of the internal world in the reality of communism and the consequences that arise from treating USSR taboo topics openly. The value of the conducted research lies in the scientific approach to the variety of intertextual connections in the film, which significantly broadens the perception of Panfilov’s oeuvre.
