Summary/Abstract: Toward the end of 1991, Croatia defended itself desperately against the manifestly superior aggressive power of the predominantly Serbian forces of the Yugoslav People's Army. The calls to the international community co recognize Croatian independence, legally declared six months earlier in accordance with the Yugoslav constitution, finally were answered. The European Community announced in the middle of December that on January 15, 1992, they would recognize all former Yugoslav republics that complied with international standards regarding the protection of human and minority rights.
