Summary/Abstract: Contemporary analyses of post-socialist transitions disagree on a wide range of issues, but generally share the view that all the countries of Eastern Europe carry a double burden. Their attempts to construct the institutions of democracy and market are mediated by the legacy of state socialism. Because culture-from social worldview and political discourse to work habits and moral sensibilities - is a part of this legacy, the construction of democracies and markets also requires cultural adaptation. Such adaptation, however, presupposes, if not a coherent view of socialist culture, at least a recognition of its fundaments. [...]
