Handicraft terminology as a component in Slovak and Bulgarian set phrases, proverbs and sayings

Summary/Abstract: The article discusses phraseological units, such as set phrases, proverbs and sayings, which contain handicraft terminology in the Bulgarian and Slovak languages. Such units in the phraseology of the two Slavic languages were not within the scope of special research, but as a whole they form a kind of layer, which, directly linking material, social and spiritual culture, testifies to the cultural and national experience and tradition of the two Slavic language communities. The equivalent and asymmetric semantic structures are analyzed, illustrating both the institutionalization of crafts and artisans in Bulgarian and Slovak society, and the distribution of language units in the individual phraseosemantic macro- and microfields when explicating the a posteriori concept ‘handicraft’. The structural models: verb-noun, comparative, symmetrical (with a connecting preposition, based on dichotomy), single, noun and verb phrases with be and have (for a situation-based existence) are discussed, and some ethnospecific nuances in the construction of imagery by means of craft register lexemes are identified.
