Summary/Abstract: The end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century was a time of complete and final secularization of culture in Europe and in the Slavic world. Anthropocentrism replaced theocentrism. Literature was perceived as a kind of religion; writing - as a sacred act, and the writer - as a chosen and holy person - a moral and spiritual (in the figurative sense of the word) leader of society. The most popular idea about Kiril Hristov is that he is "sick of life", that his poetry is hedonistic, that he is a singer of love, but this is true only to some extent. There are only a few "hedonistic" lyrical works by Kiril Hristov. The more important problem in his poetry is the poet's dramatic impossibility to identify with the society, which is in spiritual and moral decay, the broken ties and conflict with it, and the drama of the chosen one in the ‘dead’ world of the others.
