Summary/Abstract: Following an almost century-long tradition, Bulgarian literature written during the period 1912 – 1918 has always been considered feeble, nondescript, and unproductive, even a “dead strip” after a popular metaphor by Georgi Bakalov. This paper (which is part of a larger study on the same topic) argues against the easy popularity of this opinion, based on a research on the literature, literary criticism and journalism of the period in question. It provides reasons for a deviation from tradition interpretation. Besides, it poses two new questions never debated so far: which are the exact temporal boundaries of the period, and is it possible to perceive it as a homogenous entity? In the light of literary history, the paper is focused on the early years of 1912 – 1918 period: from the fall of 1912 to the fall of 1913 when the two Balkan wars took place.
