Aspects of the chthonic, the demonic and the archetype of female initiation in tales of at 480 type in Bulgarian folklore

Summary/Abstract: The present article demonstrates the archaic foundations of the tales of subtypes *480 (1) and *480 (3) of tale type AT 480 in Bulgarian folklore, reflecting ancient mythological notions of the world and rituals of female initiation. The connection of these tales with the myth and the archetype of female initiation is traced by analyzing the correlations between main motives in the tales and the mythological notions of the chthonic, demonic and female initiation.
