Summary/Abstract: This article considers the referential nature of nouns (noun phrases) in appositional constructions in Bulgarian syntax. In particular, it examines the extralinguistic reference of the elements in non-detached appositional constructions. The study highlights the differences between the referential function of the appositional construction as a whole and the referential features of its components. The paper also discusses the most tenable view that the referential function of some components is not realised individually, and that they have a common, aggregate reference. The article looks more closely at the ways in which the referential features of proper nouns and common nouns, as units of a particular type of appositional construction, determine their syntactic functions: as head nouns and as appositives.
