Summary/Abstract: Turgut Özal promoted active foreign policy. Following strictly his pro-Western convictions, he did not give up his desire for Turkey to play the role of a protector of the Turkish communities in the Arab world and Central Asia and of the Muslim communities on the Balkans. He is also remembered for the liberalisation of the economic sphere, as this is how he laid the foundations of the Turkish modern industry.
