Summary/Abstract: Montenegro’s political transformation from communism to liberal democracy was marked by remarkable political and social developments all of which severely damaged democratic consolidation and political transformation. Instead of following the pattern of other Central/Eastern European states, Montenegro was deadlocked with an unresolved national question and fragile democratic framework; prolongation of fundamental emancipation of society and state. The article examines major political developments starting the dissolution of Yugoslavia and the introduction of pluralism, and their implications on political and societal transformations in Montenegro.
