Summary/Abstract: The parents of social risk families lacking parenting skills create unfavourable conditions for children’s socialization. Seeking to decrease the number of social risk families and to create a favourable environment for children’s socialization it is necessary to work with the family training their social and parenting skills in “Parenting Skills Schools” programs. The aim of the research is to define the functions of a social worker improving parenting skills of social risk families. The tasks of this research are to analyze the reasons determining lack of parenting skills of social risk families, to identify what main skills the parents of social risk families are lacking and to define the main functions of a social worker improving parenting skills of social risk families. Scientific literature analysis was made and a questionnaire was developed. Research results show that the children from social risk families where the parents are lacking parenting skills are pedagogically neglected as their parents do not know how to use constructive methods of education. A social worker while giving social support for such families and developing parenting skills performs the following functions: consults, mediates, helps educating the children at home and in this way provides the parents with the knowledge and skills necessary for a qualitative functioning of the family.
