Summary/Abstract: Of all four concepts that are enumerated unimaginatively in the title, and whose definitions have been passionately contested, Eastern Europe, for all the controversy over its identity, seems the easiest to define. It is, therefore, appropriate to begin by introducing the terms that are the basic objects of this paper. Because so many wars have been fought over nationalism and communism, both real ones and wars fought with words, it is necessary to inspect and display one's conceptual tools before beginning to use them; in a word, to state where one stands, in very broad terms, within the theoretical debate.
