Summary/Abstract: It is quite clear that broadcasting television, as we knew it, is over. It was marked by a centralized industrial structure with a few channels, by one-way dissemination of messages to mass audiences and it prevailed until the early 1980s. The second stage is labelled as multichannel television and characterized by many thematic channels and fragmentation of the audience. In the 1990s the digitization of distribution technologies opened the way for some interactive program formats as well. Nevertheless, it was the internet that shaped a third stage of television with online audiovisual services like catch-up tv and subscription video on-demand streaming. I argue that online audiovisual services with a huge content inventory and providing new innovative formats can be conceptualized as an extension of television.
