Summary/Abstract: In our paper, we explore the cultural roots of the Golden Team in the context of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy’s modernism which showed postmodern attributes. According to our interpretation, in connection with the age’s ontology, they played “grund-football” in two respects. On the one hand, in the sense that many players have learned to play football on the “grund” (sand-lot). Even as world-famous footballers, they were surrounded by the innovative spirit of the “grund”, which survived the fall of the Monarchy even in the 1950s. On the other hand, in line with the ontological pluralism of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy constituted by creative destruction, the modernist foundations of football were fundamentally questioned by their playing style.
