Summary/Abstract: Medicine is a fascinating field, introduced from the beginning as an interface between „art and science”; history of medicine and advances in modern medical research high lights the outstanding achievements that have been achieved by involving representatives of the female gender. Classic Medicine evokes numerous figures of women physician and researcher who paved the way for reconsidering image and recognizing the contribution of women in particular progress of this area. In 1000, one of the most famous medical educational institu tions are in Salerno, Italy. There she taught medicine a highly famous teacher, Trotula, who wrote a treatise on obstetrics and gynecology, renowned at that time. In her classes, she teaches different notions about the interpretation of biological samples and methods for establishing the diagnosis, but also about using morphine in pain therapy. In classic field of medicine, remain also emblematic portraits of Elizabeth Blackwell, as the first woman who obtained her medical degree in the US in 1849, or Mary Edwards Walker, a surgeon woman, a great patriot, obtain ing the honour medal from the American Congres. In the modern era, women with medical studies, physics or chemistry have been involved in advanced research and some of their findings were rewarded with Nobel award: Marie and Irène Curie, Gerty Cori Teresa, Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin or Rosalyn Sussman Yalow. This paper aims to present the main achievements of women in the medical field, between classical and modern period, and to comment some particular aspects of female representation in clinical care and research medical activities.
