Summary/Abstract: The paper proposes some considerations regarding the culinary theme in Alberto Moravia’s novel “Gli indifferenti” (“The Time of Indifference”), revisiting this topic in the spirit of current study trends that pay close attention to it and scrutinize it from multiple perspectives. The analysis focuses in particular on the sensory aspect, significant for the representation of the world and the specific atmosphere, following the contribution of the senses in the development of meals, how and when they manifest themselves in relation to the attitude and the degree of involvement of characters and the relationships between them. In addition to the elements of setting and atmosphere, another point of interest is the scheme of the culinary ceremony, in the succession of the sequences that make it up, the practices of commensality – more accentuated and more important than the description of dishes and the reactions which they trigger – with their ritual and scenographic elements.
