Summary/Abstract: The Romanian peasant, „the cornerstone of the house” or „the sole of the nation's foot”, is the integral expression of the Romanian soul, an invaluable treasure of language and traditions. Being humiliated and oppressed, his fate was cruel and ruthless, but, nevertheless, remained steadfast attached to his forefather's land and values. Through all the events and ordinances through which he has passed, he defended his land, dignity and freedom. The most gruesome tragedies through which the Romanian peasantry has passed were those caused by foreign oppressors: in Transylvania from Hungarians, in Bessarabia from the Russians, in Moldavia and Wallachia from the Turks, and in more modern times those suffered at the hands of the „Red Plague” – the forced collectivization by the means of communism. A specific characteristic of the Romanian peasant is humanity or his availability towards his kin, which is deeply imprinted in the Romanian law or the Old law. All of this gives the Romanian peasantry its nobility par excellence.
