Summary/Abstract: School uniform first appeared in England in the early sixteenth century in the schools for poor children. For about three centuries the uniform was kept. A change occurred in England, where the best public schools have adopted the uniform, a reason for pride and which has remained largely unchanged. In Romania, at the beginning of the 20th century, the uniform was carried with pleasure and pride, being a symbol of the schools. During communism, it became common for all the students and a symbol of repression of personal manifestation. All the schools in the country had the same uniform. After 1990, the students did not wear uniforms anymore, and this produced a separation between them due to the big differences in clothing. This has led to a proposal of reintroduction of the uniform in the schools where this was agreed between schools and the parents. Many parents consider the uniforms a symbol of social harmony, order and discipline. Are the uniforms hiding the poverty or increasing the reputation of that school?
