Summary/Abstract: The article's purpose is to present to the Romanian public of legal specialism the California Consumer Privacy Act AB 375, which commenced its application on January 1st, 2020, being the Transatlantic answer to the General Data Protection Regulation (EU). The chosen research method was studying and explaining the Californian normative text, in the context of California's importance, but also of locally established definitions. Following this research, I was able to show the principal rights instituted by this new regulation, together with their procedural guarantees, as well as the corresponding obligations of the business environment for the protection of consumers' personal data. The California Consumer Privacy Act draws on a different philosophy than the European regulation, a more mercantilist one, which seeks to protect consumers against the financial exploitation of their data. Although its personal sphere of application is more restricted (its rights benefitting only Californian residents), the economic weight of the affected companies means that it can be the main competitor against the European standard of data protection.
