Summary/Abstract: The study largely presents the evolution of the Romanian legislation in view of compliance with the Community requirements in the year 2007, as well as the new elements with the promotion and protection of human rights in the European Union. A great deal of the amendments and the recently adopted legislation, presented in the first part of the text, refer to fighting discrimination, women’s rights, the rights of the child and the family, minorities, disabled persons, as well as the improvement of the system of institutions having powers in the field. As far as the European Union and the year 2007 are concerned, the author also refers to and examines the events related to the European Year of Equality of Opportunities, the preoccupation for the strengthening social cohesion, the Green Charter and the revision of the effective norms related to the protection of the consumer, the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue, the inauguration of the fifth principle of free movement, namely, the one referring to knowledge and innovation. Ample space is devoted to the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, solemnly proclaimed on 12 December 2007.
