Summary/Abstract: Christian theology can not give up the discussions about and the fight for the achievement of human rights. The author, a high Catholic hierarchy, opinions that one of the fundamentals of human rights is to be found in The Old Testament (Genesis 1:26). Hence human dignity, the freedom of thought and the freedom to choose a certain conduct, the value of each human being, in its singularity. In The New Testament, human conduct is raised above any racial, social, cultural, religious or intellectual barriers. The Catholic Church deems that human rights express the person’s transcendent dignity and appreciates that the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights represented a moment of particular significance to humanity with the shaping of a moral conscience in conformity with the person’s dignity. The Church has been making its own contribution, either by reflecting upon human rights or by signaling and denouncing abuses.
