Summary/Abstract: When the word Havana is uttered, most Hungarians will think of Cuba. Some however might associate Havana with an adhesive tape or a colour, whereas many people living in Budapest would connect it to the 18th district. This study stems from a local history research and investigates the history of the Havana building complex in the context of Hungarian-Cuban relations. First it presents those factors which could have played a role in naming the place Havana and then concentrates on the fate of the building bloc: its decline from the exemplary Socialist melting pot in the 1970s to a marginalized part of the city by the 1990s. The final sections of the essay cover the period from the change of system in Hungary until the second half of the 2010s. The paper analyses the evolution of (the image of) the Havana building complex in the context of interconnected history.
