Summary/Abstract: Over the past 25 years, the Afro-Cuban Santería religion has became known in many countries all around the world. It has spread throughout Mexico, primarily in the capital and in the southern part of the country, the Yucatan Peninsula and the Gulf of Mexico. The origins of Santería can be traced to the influence of film, music and dance in the 1940s, but it spread mostly in the mid-1990s, spurred by Mexican and Cuban politics. The priests, religious leaders and believers form small groups and, since it is a non-institutionalized religion, we can distinguish variations of cults and rites. The basic concept remains the same just some communities reject Cuban influence and try to return to the “original” African Yoruba religion. Other communities hold on to Cuban relationships, and there are places where local variations came to the fore. However, it can be said that the Afro-Cuban Santería found fertile ground in Mexico.
