Summary/Abstract: East European rock music has begun to receive increasing scholarly attention, and recent studies have described the political and institutional obstacles musicians and performers face in Eastern Europe. Researchers have begun to study how independent and grass-roots musical cultures emerge. East European societies of the 1980s were beset by political turmoil, cultural ferment, and economic crises, nowhere better demonstrated than in the emergence of alternative youth and rock music cultures in East Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Yugoslavia, and the Soviet Union.
