Summary/Abstract: The author presents and analyzes the relationship between the Church and the State, between the denominations and the State's institutions, and the way such relationship is constitutionally regulated in European States and States on other continents. One should notice the fact that the trends and the evolving manifestations with the great majority of societies do influence and, in many cases, even determine similar ways also for the religious phenomenon as a whole (no matter whether we refer to the consecrated Churches, or religious communities created on the basis of more recent principles, or religious sects, etc.). This is relevant for it clearly marks the prevailing trends with the lay orientation as opposed to the religious one at international level, including the guarantee of human rights (which also includes the rights and the freedom of religious conscience), whereas, until recently (even during the 19th century), the Church would have a much more important role, often a decisive one, in its relationship with the State's structures, including the establishment of the latter's policy and ways and means of its implementation. Thus, there are at international level more and more visible religious orientations and trends of overcoming the adversities between peoples and civilizations, of establishing bridges of dialogue and religious-philosophical debates as well as efforts on behalf of the States to implement and put to value those actions that can harmonize the common interests consisting of the promotion and the broadening of international cooperation.
