Summary/Abstract: As in the rest of the European space, in the Romanian Principalities (Principatele Române) the internal organization of the towns, apart from ensuring the important and typically urban functions, has, from the beginning, considered the internal supply and the trade with raw or processed agricultural products. Occasional or specialized fairs and cattle fairs, which initially operated frequently with the small trade, were gradually removed outside or at the borders of towns and articulated to local or regional roads, as well as to permanent indoor fairs.Buzău is no exception and the increasingly numerous historical data since the 19th century, offer indications regarding the planning and implementation of the several components of the modernization programs in the food sector, in conjunction with hygiene, water supply, public health and urban aspect. Among them it is worth mentioning the segregation of the spaces and arrangements for the food and non-food trade, from which Obor was born, or the weekly fair of cereals, cattle and timber that is expanded, remodelled and permanently equipped (1831, 1833, 1838, 1844, 1850, 1854, 1871 etc.), the 1897–1898 building of the Meat and Fish Hall (“Consumer Hall”, “Bazar” later) at the limit of the central commercial area, the arrangement of the St. Angels market before 1894, modernized after 1920 and, finally, the complete relocation and restoration of this market, according to the project of the architect Duiliu Marcu, after 1934. Renamed “Central Square”, it becomes one of the first modern markets (of “cubist” – “Art-Decó” style) in Romania. The article details the context of building and arranging the market, its urban and architectural qualities, as well as the evolution/involution of it and its adjacent space to date.
