Summary/Abstract: The study is devoted to a long period in the history of Romania, 1821-1940, dealt with from the viewpoint of human rights and fundamental freedoms. Following the chronological record, the approach emphasizes upon those social-political movements that militated for certain civil and political rights to be acknowledged and guaranteed, as well as the important moments with the development of the legislation consecrating these rights. An extended part of the study is devoted to an examination of the constitutions of 1886, 1923 and 1938 in terms of the provisions referring to democratic rights and freedoms.
